Listen: Junoflo’s New Chart-topping Single ‘La Familia’

Since emerging as one of the more intriguing stars to come out of Korea’s sensational rap-competition program, Show Me the Money, Junoflo’s career has been on a steady rise and continues to do so with his ambitious new release.

On June 16, the California MC (real name Sam Park) kept his momentum going with new single titled “La Familia.” Producer and written by Junoflo, the Latin-pop–inspired, melancholic track sees the 25-year-old rapping with authoritative wisdom and emotional depth of someone well beyond his age; showcasing the potential of his budding talents and distancing himself as another reality star capitalizing on the buzz from his TV show.

Show Me the Money helped Junoflo build an initial following of dedicated fans and solid recognition for his versatile slick style. He released his debut EP Only Human under Feel Ghood Music in March 2018 with the six-tracks — featuring him alternating effortlessly between Korean and English — providing striking rap performances on highlights like “Real Ones” and the Jay Park–assisted “Grape Vine.”

The album led Junoflo to make his first Stateside solo performance as part of the Korea Spotlight showcase at SXSW 2018 alongside big K-pop names like Crush and Lee Hi. He has since played to sold-out crowds all over Korea, Germany, with an intimate New York City concert to celebrate the release of Only Human moving fans to line up for blocks, all positioning him better than any one of his SMTM competitors for long-term mainstream success.

While Junoflo hasn’t had his major breakout moment yet, the young rapper seems to be evolving consistently. With growing stardom and critical attention, along with impressive new single, 2018 may very well be the year he officially elevates his status.

The always-impressive Buffalo rap classicist Benny The Butcher releases a lot of music, but it sometimes comes out in unpredictable, haphazard ways. Last year, for instance, Benny and his Black Soprano Family crew released their Summertime Butch album. Benny also came out with the Buffalo Butch Vol. 1 EP, which had a Drake collab and which almost immediately disappeared from the internet. Now, Benny’s got a new seven-track project entitled Excelsior available on all digital streaming platforms and it’s an instant classic.

Excelsior, which is named after the New York state motto, has appearances from Styles P, Skyler Blatt, P.R.E.M.O., Sule, and Fuego Base, as well as production from people like Harry Fraud and Daringer. The lead single “Duffel Bag Hottie’s Revenge” features another underground rap workhorse: Boldy James, who somehow had time to record his verse for this amidst his schedule of releasing a new album every other week this year. (I have lost track of whether or not that’s an exaggeration.)

Stream the album and purchase the official merch here.

Westside Gunn has dropped off a surprise remix of “Egypt” featuring some fiery bars from Doechii.

On Friday (May 2), Gunn unleashed the unexpected collaboration on the world, which made sense considering Doechii was technically on the original “Egypt” — or at least, her voice was. In the version of the track that appeared on Westside Gunn’s The Heels Have Eyes EP back in April, he sampled a snippet of Doechii’s Apple Music interview with Ebro Darden.

“One hundred percent/ You know, recently I’ve been into a lot of MF DOOM (OK)/ Rest in peace (Yup)/ I’ve been into a lot of MF DOOM, um/ Westside Gunn (Mhm), love him, he’s so talented (Super)/ So incredible,” she said to Darden in September.

Young Thug has shared his thoughts on Kendrick Lamar name-dropping him in his chart-topping diss track against Drake, “Not Like Us.”

On the third verse of the 2024 song, K. Dot references Drake’s many collabs with Atlanta artists, saying that he runs to them for street cred.

“You called Future when you didn’t see the club/Lil Baby helped you get your lingo up/21 gave you false street cred/Thug made you feel like you a slime in your head/Quavo said you can be from Northside/2 Chainz say you good, but he lied,” he rapped.

Thugger sat down with GQ this month for his first interview since being released from jail back in October and was finally asked how he felt about it. And he made it clear who he’s rocking with in the beef.

“Yeah, he just spoke on people’s name in Atlanta,” he said. “I don’t know what that was about. I’m a Drake fan.”

Just before “Not Like Us” took over the world last summer, Young Thug’s girlfriend Mariah The Scientist revealed she’d been keeping her man up to date on the beef from behind bars and shared his then-thoughts.

“I play him the [diss] songs over the phone and shit,” she said. “He’s a lover of music in general. He f–ks with everybody. I don’t think he would ever be able to – let me not speak for him. He love music though.”
